How Does a Fireplace Heat Reflector Work?

In an unprotected fireplace, the firebrick in your firebox will absorb a great deal of the heat from your fire instead of projecting it out into your living area. Not only does this affect the indoor temp of your living space, but over time, the heat can cause firebricks to crack and mortar joints to crumble and deteriorate.

Repairing a damaged firebox usually means having detailed tuckpointing work done, which can be expensive and time-consuming. But, there is something you can do to prevent firebox breakdown! Cue heat reflectors.

A fireplace heat reflector works by directing heat back into the room, rather than allowing it to escape through the chimney. Usually made of heavy-duty steel or cast iron (with a highly reflective surface), the reflector is placed at the back wall of the fireplace. As the fire burns, the heat reflector’s materials are designed to capture and then redirect this heat forward, increasing the overall warmth felt in the living space.

In addition to improving heating efficiency, a heat reflector protects the back wall of the fireplace from intense heat, reducing wear and tear over time.

Keep the Heat Where It Should Be: Install a Heat Reflector

When Weststar Chimney Sweeps’ technicians install a dependable heat reflector or heat shield in your firebox, the back wall of the firebox is exposed to roughly a third less heat than it is without one. Instead of being absorbed by the back wall of the firebox, heat is radiated into the living area, where it provides added warmth to the home and its inhabitants.

In fact, when a heat reflector is added to a fireplace, homeowners typically see a 20 to 40 percent increase in the amount of heat that’s being reflected back into the room, depending on the type of fireplace they’re using. Whatever the percentage of the increase may be, you’ll most certainly notice a difference.
